SCSS: My mixins for CSS

Jekyll does support SASS and SCSS, the documentation can be found at sass-lang.com. These both techniques are a kind of pre-compiler or pre-processor to generate css - cascading style sheets. This blog uses jekyll as a static site generator, so we can use SCSS as well.

To reuse sass or scss code Mixins were introduced. Mixins helps to keep the code cleaner and easier to maintain. With Mixins you can created nested css-styles, use css-fallbacks as a single command, reuse group of css-styles and much more.

Here you can see the mixins which are used on the current blog.

To use one of the mixins inside your scss (SASS and SCSS files are by default placed inside the _sass folder), just do …

CSS: Tesa (transparent tape) look for a div

Normal rectangle div-elements or other html-containers are mostly boring. That is why I want to create a transparent tape (adhesive foil) on each corner to have a kind of fancy style. The tape look was of course inspired by the brands Tesafilm ® and Scotch tape ®.

To generate that look a wrapper html element is needed, e.g a div. Important is that the position is relative position: relative; in that container. The child elements, in my example the em needs to be absolute positioned position: absolute;.

The class tape-container is assign to a div, the additional styles are defined with an inline css style notation. The em child elements are marked with teh class tape and for each corner the additional class top-left, top-right, bottom-right or bottom-left. If you want to use less tape, just omit the corners which are not needed.

Here is the CSS file, the output was generated from a SCSSfile, see below.

The rotation with 15° fits best for my purpose. The tape look will extend the area of the container element, so you have to handle some margin, I used 1.5rem. With the light yellow (#f3eda9) color, together with the opacity of 0.5, the tape is a bit more highlighted. The short edge border-left and border-right of the tape gets an dashed border look 2px dashed. Finally check the z-order (what is laying on each other), I picked the value 3.

TIP: Maybe make a bit of randomness to the 15° rotation and vary the width from static 8rem to 6rem to 10rem, so it looks more real.

Examples

Compare border and no-border

Set or omit the border style border: 2px solid to see the differences.

To keep the paper look, I would always use a small css-border on all for edges of the parent container element. Maybe also you need a bit of padding inside the container.

Rotate the parent container

Rotation e.g. transform: rotate(2deg), it is fine from -10° to 10° for containers with small height (think about mobile devices, when height will maybe extend). When the rotation is too big the margin will causes some issues. Take care on additional margin after and before the container! Here an example with a container rotation of 2°.

Jekyll Show Random Posts

Neither in Jekyll nor in Liquid there is a option to get a random value out of an array. But there is modulo filter which can be used to archive the goal.

I found a solution on StackOverflow - 31490789, and adjusted my need a bit so I was able to get three different random posts.

The code above can be used in markdown and html files inside the pages, _posts and _drafts folder.

The idea behind is to get a bit of randomness by using the current time and then use modulo to keep inside the limits of your post array. To get instead a single random post I have add one time 20 and one time 80, any number would be fine as well.

Add appraisal to a rubygem project

Appraisals is a tool to generate different Gemfiles so you can do matrix testing (e.g. different versions of ruby).

How to add `appraisal` to your project

Add the appraisal to the group development from the Gemfile

bundle add appraisal --skip-install --group development

Run bundle install to install the dependencies.

bundle install

Create a Appraisals file on root of the project.

Turn off your monitors with powershell

Running the ps1 command will turn off your monitors or screens.

powershell (Add-Type '[DllImport(\"user32.dll\")]^public static extern int SendMessage(int hWnd, int hMsg, int wParam, int lParam);' -Name a -Pas)::SendMessage(-1,0x0112,0xF170,2)

Running the ps1 command (SendMessage is replaced with PostMessage) will turn off your monitors amd close the terminal.
